Systemic Therapy for Colorectal Cancer

EUOS invitedyou to join us for an evening with Dr Lesley Dawson, consultant and honorary senior lecturer in Medical Oncology, based at the Edinburgh Cancer Centre at WGH. She formerly was one of the organisers of the HOPB module for Y5. She gave a talk entitled: "Systemic anti-cancer therapy (and other options) for colorectal cancer - every little helps!"

She focused on the changes in treatment options for colorectal cancer that she has seen over the last 20 years and discussed relevant cases to illustrate these changes. She also shared some other new changes that are on the horizon. 

An Evening of Neuro-Oncology

In this evening of Neuro-oncology, firstly we introducedDr Sara Erridge, consultant clinical oncologist specialising in neuro-oncology and thoracic malignancies. She trained in Oncology in Edinburgh and then worked in Canada before returning to Scotland. She spoke about the role of radiotherapy in the management of brain tumours, recent developments in the field, and relevant research taking place here in Edinburgh.

Secondly, Dr Faye Robertson, a specialty trainee in clinical oncology and academic clinical fellow undertaking a PhD, discussed her research project and her career pathway as an academic clinical fellow.

Advances in Lung Cancer Treatment

The Edinburgh University Oncology Society invited people to join us for an evening with Dr Tamasin Evans, consultant clinical oncologist in the Edinburgh Cancer Centre, who discussed recent progressions in the treatment of lung cancer.

Dr Evans spoke about radiotherapy and systemic therapy and, in particular, the promising and exciting advances that these treatments are displaying in the prognosis of patients with lung cancer. 

A New Hope: Novel Therapeutics in Advanced Melanoma

Melanoma is currently the 5th most common cancer in Scotland and it takes the lives of 200 people in this country every year. As melanoma advances, the beneficial effects of chemotherapy disintegrate, leaving patients with very few therapeutic options.We welcomedDr Ewan Brown, a consultant medical oncologist specialising in melanoma, who discussed the new "game-changing" treatments in the field. Dr Brown is also heavily involved in a Malawi Cancer Partnership which aims to support the ongoing development of cancer and palliative care services by sharing expertise and developing clinical pathways to promote high quality, safe and effective treatment for patients with all stages of cancer.

We welcomedDr Louise Fraser, who works at St Columba's Hospice. She discussed what medical students and doctors should know about palliative medicine, careers in the field, and future prospects and exciting recent developments.

Neuro-Oncology

This talk was given by Dr Robin Grant, a consultant NHS neurologist who provides a specialist opinion for cancer patients with neurological symptoms. He has been involved in studies related to tumour-associated epilepsy, fatigue, depression and cognition, and has a particular interest in Symptoms Research and Quality of Life in neuro-oncology.
